US tennis star Venus Williams has suggested she could
make a return to the French Open for the first time since 2021, despite a
recent early exit at the Madrid Open.
The 4-time Olympic gold medalist revealed the
possibility after losing 6-2, 6-4 to Kaitlin Quevedo in the first round of the
Madrid Open. The defeat marked her 10th consecutive loss, but she maintained a
positive outlook on her performance and return to clay court tennis.
Williams, a former world No. 1 who first reached the
top ranking in February 2002, said she still enjoys playing on clay despite
limited recent experience on the surface. She also confirmed she will miss the
upcoming Italian Open due to scheduling considerations.
Speaking after her match, she noted that the
tournament was a useful step in her comeback process, adding that continuing on
clay would be ideal as she works to regain rhythm and match fitness.
Throughout her career, Williams has won 7 Grand Slam
singles titles and 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, all achieved alongside her
sister Serena Williams, cementing her legacy as one of the sport’s most
accomplished athletes.
