As the Super Falcons begin their quest to defend their
Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, attention will once again be on
the players expected to drive Nigeria's pursuit of a record-extending 11th
continental crown.
Blending experienced campaigners with emerging stars,
the nine-time African champions boast a squad capable of challenging any
opponent. Here are five key players who could shape Nigeria's campaign.
Esther Okoronkwo
Esther Okoronkwo established herself as one of
Nigeria's most influential players during the last WAFCON after overcoming
early fitness concerns.
The AFC Toronto forward played a decisive role in
Nigeria's dramatic comeback victory over hosts Morocco in the final. She
converted a penalty to ignite the fightback before providing two assists as the
Super Falcons recovered from a two-goal deficit to secure a memorable 3-2
victory. Her outstanding display earned her the Player of the Match award in
the final.
Known for her creativity and ability to unlock
stubborn defences, Okoronkwo will once again be expected to spearhead Nigeria's
attacking play.
Rasheedat Ajibade
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade remains one of the most
important figures in the Super Falcons squad.
The Paris Saint-Germain star was named the
tournament's Best Player at the previous WAFCON after producing a series of
commanding performances throughout the competition.
Renowned for her leadership, tireless work rate,
creativity and eye for goal, Ajibade will be central to Coach Justin Madugu's
plans as Nigeria seeks another African title and qualification for the 2027
FIFA Women's World Cup.
Chiamaka Nnadozie
In goal, Nigeria will once again rely on Chiamaka
Nnadozie, one of Africa's most accomplished goalkeepers.
The Brighton shot-stopper has dominated the CAF
Women's Goalkeeper of the Year award in recent years, winning the honour three
consecutive times.
Her excellent reflexes, commanding presence and
ability to organise the defence make her a vital part of the Super Falcons'
setup as they prepare for another demanding tournament.
Halimatu Ayinde
Midfield general Halimatu Ayinde provides the
experience and composure that allow Nigeria's attacking players to flourish.
A four-time WAFCON champion, the BK Häcken midfielder
is known for her intelligent positioning, defensive awareness and accurate
distribution.
Her ability to control the tempo of matches and
protect the backline will be crucial as the Super Falcons navigate the
competition.
Chinwendu Ihezuo
Forward Chinwendu Ihezuo adds pace, strength and goals
to Nigeria's attack.
The Pachuca striker scored three goals at the previous
WAFCON, including a crucial strike against Botswana that helped secure
Nigeria's place in the knockout stage.
Having recovered from injury, Ihezuo returns to the
squad eager to make another major impact and strengthen the Super Falcons'
attacking options.
With a squad that combines proven experience and
youthful talent, the Super Falcons enter the 2026 WAFCON among the favourites
to lift the trophy once again. If these key players perform at their best,
Nigeria will be well-positioned to make history by claiming an unprecedented
11th African title.
