West Ham United
secured a crucial 3-1 victory against Newcastle United at the London
Stadium on Saturday, moving slightly closer to escaping the Premier League
relegation zone. The win, West Ham’s first at home this season, leaves them just
three points behind 17th-placed Burnley, whom they face next week.
Portuguese head coach Nuno Espírito Santo,
appointed in late September, finally tasted victory after a patient start to
his tenure, just over two weeks after being dismissed by Nottingham Forest, who
are also struggling in the drop zone.
Match Summary
Newcastle took an early lead through Jacob Murphy,
who fired in a superb strike in the fourth minute, just 26 seconds after Jarrod
Bowen saw a shot rebound off the post.
West Ham were awarded a penalty shortly after, but a
VAR review overturned referee Robert Jones’ decision after it was ruled
that Malick Thiaw had touched the ball.
The Hammers drew level in the 35th minute thanks to Lucas
Paquetá, who struck powerfully from outside the box past a sprawling Nick
Pope. Just before half-time, West Ham went ahead when defender Aaron
Wan-Bissaka’s low cross deflected off Sven Botman into his own net,
leaving Pope stranded.
Second-Half Developments
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe made three changes
at the break—bringing on Fabian Schär, William Osula, and Jacob Ramsey—in
an attempt to revitalize his side, which dominated possession early in the
second half.
Despite controlling the ball, Newcastle were blunt
in attack, with Pope called into action twice as West Ham threatened to
extend their lead. A goal from midfielder Freddie Potts was disallowed
for offside, leaving Newcastle searching for an equalizer.
Tomas Soucek
ensured all three points for the Hammers in the dying moments, confirming a
morale-boosting win for the home side.
