WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature on iOS
that allows users to share recent group chat history with newly added members,
according to a report by WABetaInfo.
The feature, spotted in WhatsApp beta for iOS
version 26.2.10.73, enables group admins or members who add someone to a
group to share up to 100 recent messages from the past 14 days. The
update is designed to help new participants quickly catch up on ongoing
discussions, addressing a long-standing limitation that prevented new members
from viewing earlier messages.
The option is disabled by default, giving users
full control over whether chat history is shared. Those adding new members can
choose to share fewer than 100 messages, depending on preference. To minimise
the risk of accidental sharing, WhatsApp includes multiple confirmation prompts
before any messages are sent.
Messages shared through this feature appear in a distinct
colour to clearly differentiate them from live conversations. Existing
group members are also notified via a system message indicating who shared
the chat history.
Importantly, the shared messages are pulled directly
from the device of the person adding the new member and remain protected by end-to-end
encryption, ensuring user privacy and security.
The feature is currently being rolled out gradually to
a limited number of iOS beta testers, with no official timeline yet
announced for a wider public release.
