Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom
Wike, has affirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will participate in
the 2027 general elections, despite ongoing internal challenges.
Wike made the statement on Sunday while addressing
delegates at the party’s 2026 national convention held at the Moshood Abiola
National Stadium.
Responding to concerns raised by party leaders,
including Bukola Saraki and Abba Moro, about the PDP’s readiness for the next
election cycle, Wike expressed confidence that the party would be on the
ballot.
He described the convention as credible and duly
recognised by the electoral authorities, emphasizing that it reflects the
party’s renewed stability.
Wike also praised members who remained loyal during
the party’s recent internal crisis, commending their resilience in the face of
political setbacks and criticism.
According to him, the PDP has overcome a major
leadership challenge that once threatened its survival, and efforts are
underway to reposition the party to meet the expectations of Nigerians.
The former governor of Rivers State criticised recent
defections by some political figures, attributing them to weak leadership,
while assuring members that the party would remain inclusive and open to all.
However, his position continues to generate debate
within the party, as he currently serves in the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed
Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), despite retaining his membership
in the PDP.
Wike’s dual political alignment has contributed to
ongoing tensions within the opposition party, which is still navigating
internal divisions and defections as preparations for the 2027 elections gather
momentum.
