Lagos, Nigeria — Nigerian music icon Kingsley
Chinweike Okonkwo, popularly known as Kcee, has revealed a lesser-known chapter
of his life — one that could have seen him don the green and white of the Super
Eagles, following in the footsteps of football greats Jay Jay Okocha and
Nwankwo Kanu.
In a recent interview, the award-winning artist and
former member of the music duo KC Presh claimed that he was well-positioned to
become one of Nigeria’s football stars before his music career took center
stage.
“Jay Jay and Kanu were a set before me. After them, we
would have been the ones to take over the Super Eagles,” Kcee stated.
A Promising Football Path
Long before dominating the airwaves, Kcee was making
waves on the football pitch. In the mid-1990s, he played for Julius Berger FC
and Puma FC, two well-regarded Nigerian league clubs. His football talent even
earned him his first international travel experience — a trip to South Africa
for matches as a teenager. “The first time I traveled out of this country was
for football. I was playing for Julius Berger. I played for Puma. That was
before music,” he shared.
Talent Without Opportunity
Despite his evident talent, Kcee said a lack of
financial backing and support stifled his progress in the sport.
“There was no sponsorship or real support for people
like us. That’s why many dreams ended early.”
As challenges in football mounted, Kcee began
nurturing another passion — music. He eventually had to make a difficult choice
between the two.
Star Quest Changed Everything
In 2002, Kcee’s life took a dramatic turn when he
entered and won the Star Quest talent hunt alongside Precious John, forming the
now-defunct KC Presh duo. The competition not only gave him national exposure
but also financial backing.
“I started making money from music. So I had to drop
one for the other. That was why I quit football,” he explained.
From Missed Goals to Hit Songs
While Kcee didn’t go on to fill the boots of Okocha or
Kanu on the pitch, he carved out his own legacy in Nigerian entertainment with
chart-topping hits and a long-standing presence in the music industry.
His story underscores the untold journeys of many
Nigerian youths with multiple talents, whose career paths are often shaped by
circumstance as much as skill.
Now, decades later, Kcee’s reflection is both a
revelation and a reminder of the fine line between lost dreams and new
beginnings.
