Seventeen members of the House of Representatives have
defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic
Congress (NDC), in a move that signals deepening political shifts ahead of the
2027 general elections.
The defections were formally announced during plenary
on May 5, drawing attention to the growing momentum around the NDC in recent
days.
This development follows the earlier defection of
prominent political figures, including Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential
candidate of the Labour Party, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former presidential
flagbearer of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, who both moved from the ADC to the
NDC—adding a new dimension to the evolving political landscape.
Also announced during the session was the defection of
Leke Abejide, who left the ADC to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers who switched to the NDC include Yusuf
Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian
Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande, and
Munachim Umezuruike.
Others are Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi
Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, and Abdulhakeem Ado.
The wave of defections underscores ongoing political
realignments, as parties reposition and consolidate ahead of what is expected
to be a highly competitive 2027 election cycle.
