The Central Bank of Nigeria has alerted the public to
an increase in cyberattack attempts aimed at compromising personal and
financial information, urging Nigerians to remain cautious of fraudulent
messages posing as official communication from the bank.
In a statement issued by Hakama Sidi Ali, the apex
bank revealed that scammers are distributing deceptive emails and online
messages crafted to trick individuals into revealing sensitive data.
According to the bank, these fake communications often
contain misleading claims about its leadership, regulatory actions, or
licensing processes, and typically encourage recipients to click on suspicious
links.
The CBN emphasized that such tactics are designed to
gain unauthorized access to users’ accounts and exploit unsuspecting members of
the public. It advised Nigerians to only rely on its official website for
verified information and to avoid engaging with untrusted links or platforms.
The bank also encouraged individuals to confirm the
authenticity of any CBN-related message through credible channels and report
suspected fraud to security agencies.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the
financial system, the apex bank stated that it is enhancing its cybersecurity
measures in partnership with relevant institutions to tackle digital threats.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over cyber
incidents in the country. Recently, the Corporate Affairs Commission disclosed
a breach of its systems, while the Nigeria Data Protection Commission has begun
probing a suspected data compromise involving Remita Payment Services Ltd.,
Sterling Bank, and other organizations. Authorities continue to stress that
public vigilance is crucial in curbing cyber-related crimes.
