Arsenal FC booked their place in the Champions League
semi-finals despite an underwhelming performance against Sporting CP at the
Emirates Stadium.
Mikel Arteta’s side struggled to find rhythm in the
second leg but managed to protect their narrow first-leg advantage as Sporting
failed to capitalize on Arsenal’s shaky display.
The Gunners will now face Atletico Madrid in the
semi-finals after the Spanish side advanced with a 3-2 aggregate win over
Barcelona.
Although Arsenal previously thrashed Atletico 4-0
during the group stage, they will need a significant improvement to reach their
first Champions League final since 2006.
This marks the first time in the club’s history that
Arsenal have reached the semi-finals in consecutive Champions League seasons.
However, recent form remains a concern, with the team winning just once in
their last five matches across all competitions.
Despite Arteta’s call for a fearless and high-energy
performance, Arsenal delivered a disjointed display, lacking creativity and
sharpness in attack—especially in the absence of key players like Bukayo Saka
and Martin Odegaard.
Defensively, the team showed vulnerability, with
errors nearly gifting Sporting crucial opportunities. David Raya and William
Saliba were both involved in nervy moments that could have changed the outcome.
Sporting came close to breaking the deadlock, with
efforts from Francisco Trincao and Geny Catamo testing Arsenal’s resolve.
In attack, Viktor Gyokeres struggled to make an impact
before being replaced, while chances from Gabriel Martinelli and others failed
to find the net.
As the pressure mounted, Arsenal held firm in the
closing stages, much to the relief of their fans, who had grown increasingly
anxious throughout the match.
While progression to the semi-finals is a major
achievement, Arsenal’s recent inconsistency raises questions ahead of a crucial
run of fixtures, including a high-stakes Premier League clash with Manchester
City.
