The Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission Hon Lekan Fatodu has heaped praises on the organisers of the yearly Sportsville Special Recognition Awards, saying events like this are what the nation needs to bolster all round sports development.

The youthful DG made this statement when members of the award committee, led by Vanguard Newspaper Group Sports Editor, Tony Ubani, paid him a courtesy call on Friday to brief him on the preparations ahead of this year's ceremony coming up on Thursday, April 3rd, 2025 in Lagos.

"I am happy that you guys have deemed it fit to organise awards of this nature, which no doubt serves as encouragement to those supporting our sports development.

"That you have been doing this for the past four years consistently, even without sponsors, shows the calibre of brains behind it. The Lagos State Sports Commission will continue to encourage partners like Sportsville to develop Sports in and around the state," Hon Fatodu promised.

Meanwhile, the youthful DG also promised to grace the ceremony this year.

"I have heard so much about the ceremony and this time, I will be there to celebrate with you and the awardees," he added.

The delegation early on briefed the Director General on  the rationale behind instituting the award ceremony five years ago and the need to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to reward and encourage those at the forefront of the country's sports development.

According to Mr Ubani, the Sportsville Award was conceptualised to be the most credible Awards in Nigeria. "And that is why we take pains to get credible nominees as recipients every year.

"That no one has faulted our nominations since, gives us immense joy," Ubani, who has been a member of the Award Committee since inception added.

This year's ceremony comes up on Thursday, April 3rd, under the Chairmanship of Oseni Rufai, the popular Arise TV anchor, with the rave-making Cricket Federation President, Dr Uyi Akpata,  nominated as the Sports Personality of the year.
