The Catholic Diocese in Ebonyi State has announced the
passing of its spiritual leader, Bishop Chukwu, expressing deep sorrow over the
loss.
In an official statement released on April 11, 2026,
the Vicar General, Rev. Fr. Donatus Oluwa Chukwu, conveyed the diocese’s grief
while commending the late bishop’s soul to God.
According to the statement, Bishop Chukwu was born on
November 5, 1965, and was ordained a priest on July 3, 1993. Over the years, he
devoted his life to pastoral ministry, contributing significantly to the growth
and strengthening of the Catholic faith.
His journey in the episcopacy reached a major
milestone when he was consecrated and installed as the third bishop of the
diocese on August 19, 2021.
The diocese described him as a committed and devoted
leader, known for his passion for evangelisation, dedication to pastoral care,
and efforts in building a strong and united faith community. His leadership, it
noted, left a lasting impact on both clergy and lay members.
Church authorities have called on priests, religious
groups, and the faithful to keep the late bishop in their prayers while also
supporting one another during this period of mourning. Details of his funeral
arrangements are expected to be announced later.
Meanwhile, tributes have continued to pour in from
across the state and beyond, with many remembering him as a humble servant of
God and a guiding spiritual figure.
Reacting to the loss, the Governor of Ebonyi State,
Francis Nwifuru, described the late cleric as a spiritual pillar whose life
reflected humility, sacrifice, and unwavering service to humanity.
He noted that the bishop’s passing represents a
significant loss, not only to the church but to the wider community,
highlighting his role in promoting peace, unity, and justice.
An indigene of Ededeagu Umuezeokohu in Ezza North
Local Government Area, Bishop Chukwu was widely regarded as a man of faith and
a dedicated leader whose legacy will continue to inspire many.
