Edo Assembly Impeaches Former Speaker Agbebaku, Orders Return of Government Property

The crisis within the Edo State House of Assembly has taken a new turn following the formal impeachment of the former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, had reportedly resigned as Speaker on August 17, 2026, amid growing tensions within the Assembly.

Following his reported resignation, lawmakers elected Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo I Constituency, as the new Speaker. The Assembly also suspended Agbebaku indefinitely and removed two other principal officers from their positions.

Jonathan Ibhamawu, who represented Esan West Constituency, was removed as Majority Leader and replaced by Ojiezele Osezua Sunday of Esan South-East Constituency.

Similarly, Addeh Emankhu Isibor, representing Esan North-East I Constituency, was removed as Deputy Majority Leader and replaced by Inegbeboh Ojie Eugene of Igueben Constituency.

However, seven days after the initial developments, the Assembly on Monday, August 24, formally converted Agbebaku’s reported resignation into an impeachment.

The new Speaker, Yekini Idaiye, said the impeachment notice was signed by 17 lawmakers and formally presented during Monday’s plenary by the Majority Leader.

According to Idaiye, the decision followed the failure to officially present and document Agbebaku’s resignation notice after his suspension.

The Speaker maintained that Agbebaku was impeached and did not resign from office.

The motion for his formal impeachment was moved by Majority Leader Sunny Ojiezele and seconded by Ahmed Waziri, representing Etsako Central Constituency.

Following the decision, Idaiye directed Agbebaku to return all government property in his possession.

He further warned that security agencies could be invited to enforce the directive if the former Speaker fails to comply or respond to the Assembly’s instructions.

The latest development deepens the political crisis within the Edo State House of Assembly, with questions remaining over the circumstances surrounding Agbebaku’s initial resignation, subsequent suspension and eventual impeachment.
