Egypt secured a historic place in the Round of 16 of
the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout
following a thrilling 1-1 draw after extra time on Friday.
The victory marks the Pharaohs' first-ever win in the
knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup and keeps alive their hopes of a memorable
tournament run.
Egypt made the perfect start, taking the lead in the
13th minute through Emam Ashour. The midfielder rose above the Australian
defence to power home a superb header from Karim Hafez's inviting cross,
leaving goalkeeper Patrick Beach with no chance.
Despite falling behind, Australia gradually grew into
the contest and controlled much of the remainder of the first half, creating
several promising attacks without finding an equaliser before the break.
Egypt nearly doubled their advantage moments into the
second half when Omar Marmoush came close to scoring, but it was Australia who
eventually found the breakthrough.
The Socceroos levelled the score in the 55th minute
after Aiden O'Neill's delivery from a set piece deflected off Mohamed Hany and
past Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir for an unfortunate own goal.
Both teams searched for a winner as the match became
increasingly tense. Australia's Patrick Beach produced a stunning save late in
normal time, tipping Ramy Rabia's powerful header over the crossbar to keep the
scores level.
Egypt also came close through Marwan Attia in stoppage
time, but his effort was blocked, forcing the contest into extra time.
The additional 30 minutes produced few clear-cut
chances despite late pressure from Egypt, with neither side able to find the
decisive goal.
In a bold tactical move just before the end of extra
time, Australia replaced Beach with veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan in
preparation for the penalty shootout.
The gamble failed to pay off as Egypt held their nerve
from the spot. Mahmoud Saber opened the scoring after Australia's first penalty
was missed, while Ramy Rabia and Mohamed Salah both converted confidently to
keep the Pharaohs in control.
After Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil scored for
Australia, Lucas Herrington struck the crossbar with the Socceroos' fourth
attempt, handing Egypt the opportunity to seal victory.
Hossam Abdelmaguid made no mistake, calmly firing his
penalty into the bottom corner to secure a 4-2 shootout triumph and send Egypt
into the Round of 16 for the first time in the nation's World Cup history.
