Estevão delivered a sensational solo goal to win the
much-anticipated clash of teenage prodigies against Lamine Yamal on Tuesday
night, as Chelsea overpowered 10-man Barcelona 3–0 in the Champions League
league-phase.
The 18-year-old Brazilian winger stole the spotlight
at Stamford Bridge, brushing aside the pre-match comparisons urged by Chelsea
manager Enzo Maresca. Ten minutes after the restart, Estevão produced a
stunning moment of brilliance—receiving the ball on the right, gliding past two
defenders, and unleashing a thunderous strike into the roof of Joan García’s
net.
The goal—his tenth of the season for club and
country—left Barcelona with a mountain to climb, already trailing 1–0 and
reduced to 10 men.
Delap Seals It as VAR Intervenes
Chelsea’s dominance was later rewarded when substitute
Liam Delap made it 3–0 in the 73rd minute, coolly sidefooting home from close
range. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but VAR overturned the
decision.
By then, Barcelona were already well-beaten. The
five-time Champions League winners looked listless and overmatched throughout,
while Chelsea—two-time European champions—controlled proceedings from the
opening whistle.
Chelsea Strike First Through a Koundé Own
Goal
The match began at breakneck speed.
Chelsea thought they had taken the lead inside four
minutes when Enzo Fernández scrambled the ball into the net, only for the
effort to be chalked off for a Wesley Fofana handball.
Just two minutes later, Ferran Torres missed a
gilt-edged chance at the other end, skewing wide with only Robert Sánchez to
beat.
After a brief lull, Chelsea ramped up their pressure
again. Fernández had another goal disallowed—this time for offside—before Pedro
Neto fired over from close range.
The relentless pressure finally paid off in the 27th
minute. Following a short-corner routine and chaotic defending from Barcelona,
Jules Koundé inadvertently poked the ball into his own net to give Chelsea a
deserved 1–0 lead.
Araujo’s Red Card Turns the Tide
Barcelona’s night worsened just before the break when
captain Ronald Araújo received a second yellow card for a rash challenge on
Marc Cucurella, leaving the visitors with 10 men for the entire second half.
Chelsea came out with even more intensity after the
interval, and Estevão’s wonder goal put the match beyond doubt. Delap’s strike
later added gloss to a commanding display.
Yamal, who had been hyped as Estevão’s direct
counterpart in the battle of teenage sensations, struggled to make an impact
and was jeered by the home crowd as he was substituted late in the match.
Chelsea’s Champions League Revival
Continues
Back in the Champions League after a two-year absence,
Maresca’s men have now won three of their first five group matches, giving
themselves a solid chance of finishing in the top eight—an automatic ticket to
the last 16.
Chelsea’s momentum is building domestically as well.
They sit second in the Premier League, ahead of a highly anticipated home clash
against league leaders Arsenal on Sunday.
