Abuja, Nigeria
— The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that more than 1,000
companies, representing 20% of over 5,000 eligible large firms, have commenced
integration with its newly launched electronic invoicing (e-Invoicing)
platform. The initiative, which went live on August 1, 2025, marks a
significant step toward modernizing Nigeria’s tax administration and curbing
revenue leakages.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media,
Dare Adekanmbi, FIRS Executive Chairman Dr. Zacch Adedeji revealed that the
adoption follows a successful pilot phase launched in November 2024. The first
phase targets large taxpayers—companies with an annual turnover of ?5 billion
and above.
“In less than two weeks of the initiative going live,
no fewer than 1,000 companies have embraced the solution and commenced
integration with the FIRS MBS platform,” Adedeji said.
MTN Leads Early Adoption
Among the early adopters, MTN Nigeria became the first taxpayer to transmit
live electronic invoices to FIRS, officially kicking off the e-Invoicing era.
Technology giants Huawei Nigeria and IHS Nigeria have also completed test
transmissions and are set to go live shortly.
To facilitate integration, FIRS has partnered with the
National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to accredit System
Integrators and Access Point Providers. These entities will assist taxpayers in
onboarding, system integration, and invoice transmission.
Deadline Extended to November 1
Adedeji acknowledged that while many firms aimed to meet the original August 1
deadline, some faced operational and technical challenges. Consequently, FIRS
has granted a three-month grace period, moving the final onboarding deadline to
November 1, 2025.
“In the spirit of encouraging voluntary compliance,
the FIRS management has graciously approved a three-month extension of the
deadline,” he said, adding that the agency will continue to host webinars,
workshops, and town hall meetings to assist businesses in the transition.
Transforming Tax Administration
The e-Invoicing system—developed as an Electronic Fiscal System (EFS)—provides
real-time visibility into commercial transactions and guarantees the
authenticity and completeness of invoices. It is aligned with global best
practices and is a key component of the Nigeria Revenue Services Reform Act,
which seeks to harmonize revenue reporting and create a single source of truth
for government income.
Following the onboarding of large taxpayers, the
platform will be rolled out to medium-sized and emerging businesses, broadening
its reach and deepening its impact on revenue assurance and tax compliance.
Adedeji commended taxpayers, consultants, and service
providers for their cooperation, stressing that the initiative represents a
“transformative shift in Nigeria’s fiscal landscape.”
