Phil Foden struck a stoppage-time winner to spare Manchester
City from embarrassment after the Premier League contenders surrendered a
two-goal lead in a chaotic 3–2 win over Leeds United on Saturday.
City looked poised for another setback in their
faltering title chase before Foden’s late intervention rescued all three points
at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola’s side, who had suffered back-to-back
defeats against Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen, climbed to second place—four
points behind leaders Arsenal, who face Chelsea on Sunday.
City Start Fast, But Collapse After the
Break
It took just 59 seconds for City to break the
deadlock.
Foden finished from close range after Matheus Nunes sliced through the Leeds
defence.
Josko Gvardiol doubled the advantage in the 25th
minute, tapping in after Nico O’Reilly’s header. Leeds protested that Bernardo
Silva obstructed goalkeeper Lucas Perri, but after a VAR check, the goal stood.
City appeared in total control, but Leeds—third from
bottom—stunned the home crowd with a spirited second-half fightback.
Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one
back in the 49th minute, capitalising on a poor pass from Nunes inside the City
box.
Leeds equalised in the 68th minute after Gvardiol
fouled Calvert-Lewin. Gianluigi Donnarumma saved Lukas Nmecha’s penalty
but the forward tapped in the rebound to level the score.
Foden the Hero as Haaland Misfires
Erling Haaland, chasing his 100th Premier League goal,
had an uncharacteristically quiet afternoon. But Foden stepped up, weaving past
defenders deep into stoppage time before delivering a composed finish to secure
a nerve-jangling win.
The result lifts City’s spirits after what Guardiola
had described as a “lack of effort” from his rotated squad in Tuesday’s defeat
to Leverkusen.
For Leeds, a sixth defeat in seven league games piles
pressure on manager Daniel Farke.
