Former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), says he has been released after honouring an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for interrogation.

Malami disclosed this in a personally signed statement posted on X on Saturday, noting that the anti-graft agency has scheduled another date for continued engagement.

“In line with my undertaking to keep Nigerians updated on my invitation by EFCC, I give glory to Allah for His divine intervention.

The engagement was successful and I am eventually released while on an appointment for further engagement as the truth relating to the fabricated allegations against me continue to unfold.”

‘I Am a Law-Abiding Citizen’

The update comes a day after Malami confirmed he had been invited by the EFCC, promising to honour the agency’s request as a “law-abiding and patriotic citizen.”

“This is to confirm that I have been invited by the EFCC. As a law-abiding and patriotic citizen, I hereby reaffirm my commitment to honour the invitation,” he wrote on Friday.

Malami said he has built his public service career on openness, accountability, and transparency, and would cooperate with investigators to clarify all issues raised.

“I understand the spirit of accountability and transparency in public service — the principles that I both advocate and champion.”

He added that he had informed his family and associates of the EFCC’s invitation, and remains willing to answer all questions.

‘Honesty and Integrity Have Always Guided Me’

The former AGF emphasised that honesty has always shaped his leadership style and he remains committed to upholding those values throughout the investigation.

“I believe in the importance of honesty, integrity in leadership. These are principles I’ve long supported and upheld over the years I’ve spent in public service.”

Malami assured Nigerians that he would continue to provide updates as the process progresses, stressing the need for transparency in matters of public interest.

“I am informing Nigerians of any development that will follow, so that everyone will be aware.”

The EFCC has not yet disclosed details regarding the scope of its inquiry as of the time of filing this report.
