Celtic’s hopes of a first European knockout victory
since 2004 came to an end on Thursday as VfB Stuttgart advanced to the UEFA
Europa League last 16.
After suffering a 4?1 defeat in Glasgow last week,
Martin O’Neill’s side needed a strong start in the second leg in Stuttgart —
and they got one, with Luke McCowan scoring inside the opening minute. However,
Celtic could make no further inroads, leaving the Scottish champions unable to
overturn the three-goal deficit.
Despite their domestic dominance, Celtic’s European
struggles continued this season, with Hearts also challenging their supremacy
in the Scottish Premiership.
Stuttgart will discover on Friday whether they will
face FC Porto or SC Braga in the next round.
Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest aim to join Aston Villa
in the last 16 later on Thursday, carrying a 3-0 lead into the second leg of
their tie against Fenerbahçe at the City Ground.
