A lecturer with the Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Mrs. Kemi Emmanuel, has died in a tragic road accident in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Tenimu Etuku, confirmed the incident, describing the death as “very sad and unfortunate.”

According to Etuku, the accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Crusher, along the Lokoja metropolis highway. The late lecturer reportedly fell off a commercial motorcycle (okada) after being hit by a speeding truck.

“When the accident happened, our rescue team responded promptly and rushed the victim to the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, where she was confirmed dead,” Etuku said.

He added that the deceased’s body has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary, while the okada rider allegedly fled the scene under the pretext of pursuing the hit-and-run truck.

Etuku cautioned commercial motorcyclists against competing with heavy-duty vehicles on highways, stressing that such reckless behaviour often leads to preventable fatalities.

Late Mrs. Emmanuel was a respected lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts at the Federal University Lokoja, where she was admired for her dedication and passion for teaching.

The Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 2 Division Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. Polycarp Okoye, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday.

Okoye said the successful operation was carried out by troops of the 12 Brigade Lokoja and 22 Armoured Brigade Ilorin, who launched joint offensives on bandit hideouts in the two states.

Among the rescued victims were 14 males, five females, an infant, and four Chinese nationals who had been abducted from different locations across Kwara and Kogi. Some had reportedly been held captive for over four months.

Okoye reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to combating criminal activities and restoring peace in the region, urging residents to cooperate by providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
