Addressing the Challenges Faced by African SMBs

Small and medium-sized businesses play a crucial role in Africa’s economy. However, many struggle with limited access to funding and essential business development skills. According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), around 40% of SMBs in developing economies face an annual funding shortfall of $5.2 trillion.

To bridge this gap, Google’s Hustle Academy offers comprehensive business education, mentorship, and networking opportunities. Since its inception in 2022, the initiative has supported over 15,000 businesses across Africa.

Speaking at the Google Hustle Academy graduation event for the class of 2022, Inuwa Kashifu Abdullahi, Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), emphasized the program's impact in empowering African entrepreneurs.

The Academy has proven effective in helping businesses secure funding. Google reports that grant recipients have nearly doubled their success rate in securing additional financing, rising from 11% to 20%. Additionally, graduates have contributed to job creation, with an average of four new jobs generated for every ten businesses.

What to Expect from Hustle Academy 2025

The 2025 Hustle Academy boot camp will be a free, virtual program, providing entrepreneurs with expert-led training in:

  • AI Integration – Using AI for business operations, marketing, and customer engagement
  • Core Business Skills – Covering financial management, digital marketing, strategy, and leadership

To qualify, businesses must have been in operation for at least one year and be looking to scale. Entrepreneurs will gain access to mentorship, real-world case studies, and networking opportunities.

Transforming African Businesses

Over the years, Google’s Hustle Academy has had a significant impact on African SMBs. In Nigeria, Google awarded ?75 million to 15 outstanding businesses, with graduation ceremonies held in Abuja and Nairobi for 5,300 SMBs across Africa.

One notable success story is Pippy Leather Works, a Kenya-based brand specializing in handcrafted leather goods while empowering local women. Initially struggling with expansion and operational challenges, founder Milka Adhiambo saw a major transformation after attending the Google Hustle Academy in 2022. Today, the company boasts a strong online presence, doubled revenue, and a growing workforce.

Through its Hustle Academy, Google continues to drive the growth of African businesses, equipping them with the skills, resources, and networks needed to thrive in a competitive digital economy.
