Manchester City moved to the top of the Premier League table after a narrow victory over Burnley, while their opponents were officially relegated from the top flight.

Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the match, helping Pep Guardiola’s side climb level on points with Arsenal but ahead on goals scored, with five matches remaining in the title race.

The decisive moment came early in the game when Haaland was released by Jeremy Doku and calmly chipped the ball over Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to give City the lead within five minutes. Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, City were unable to extend their advantage, much to the frustration of manager Pep Guardiola.

The result confirmed Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League, marking their third drop in five seasons. The club will now return to the Championship alongside Wolves next season, having struggled throughout the campaign.

Burnley, managed by Scott Parker, sit on just 20 points from 34 matches and are 13 points adrift of safety with only four games left to play. Their relegation continues a pattern of instability, as the club has now experienced either promotion or relegation in each of the last five seasons.

Elsewhere, the match also highlighted missed opportunities for City to strengthen their title advantage, as Haaland struck the post in the second half and Burnley nearly equalised before halftime.

The Premier League title race remains tight, with Manchester City and Arsenal both still in contention. City, however, face a more difficult run-in as they aim to secure what would be their seventh league title in nine years.

In other results, Bournemouth missed a chance to strengthen their European qualification hopes after a late equaliser from Leeds United, while Chelsea dropped into seventh place following recent managerial changes.
