The abductors of 15 worshippers from a church in
Eda-Oniyo have demanded a ransom of N1 billion for their release, escalating
concerns over security in the area.
The traditional ruler of the community, Oba Joseph
Awolola, revealed the demand during a visit by a government delegation on
Wednesday. The victims were kidnapped during a vigil service on April 28 at the
Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) No. 2 in Eda-Oniyo, located in Ilejemeje Local
Government Area.
Tragically, a visiting pastor was killed during the
attack, further deepening the shock within the community.
In response to the incident, a government delegation
visited the area to assess the situation and reassure residents. The team was
led by retired Brigadier General Ebenezer Ogundana, Special Adviser on Security
to Governor Biodun Oyebanji. Other officials present included the State
Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, and the Chairman of Ilejemeje Local
Government, Pius Alaba.
Oba Awolola assured the delegation of the traditional
council’s full cooperation with authorities to secure the victims’ release and
restore peace.
Providing further details, Pius Alaba disclosed that
among those abducted is a family of four, including a mother and her three
children. He added that security agencies are actively working to ensure the
safe return of all those taken.
Efforts to rescue the victims are ongoing as
authorities continue to track down the kidnappers.
