The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has
postponed its governorship primary earlier scheduled for Thursday, 21 May 2026.
The postponement was announced in an official notice
issued by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Abdulwaheed Babatunde.
According to the statement, the APC governorship
primary would now hold on Friday, 22 May 2026. Aspirants and party faithful
were advised to take note of the new date, while no official reason was given
for the shift.
Kwara APC chairman Sunday Fagbemi later confirmed the
change to journalists, saying the national working team came in and instructed
that the election be held the next day, without providing further details.
Hours before the postponement, eight governorship
aspirants had reportedly stepped down for Abdulfatai Seriki, believed to be
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s preferred successor. The aspirants who
pledged support were Salako Oluwatoyin, Captain Ahmad Mahmoud, Wale Sulaiman,
Mohammed Bio, Toyin Alabi, Aisha Patigi, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, and the
Speaker of the House of Assembly, Yakubu Danladi.
The meeting ended with renewed commitments to party
cohesion, issue-based engagement, and a peaceful primary process.
More aspirants may also withdraw in the lead-up to the
new date, as APC governorship and legislative primaries continue across the
country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Kwara governorship primary is expected to draw
significant attention, with the incumbent governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq,
seeking to sustain his achievements.
