Manchester City secured a convincing win over Fulham
on Wednesday, boosting their Premier League title hopes with a dominant
first-half display at the Etihad Stadium. Three goals in just 15 minutes — from
Antoine Semenyo, Nico O’Reilly, and Erling Haaland — sealed the victory and
marked City’s 20th consecutive win over Fulham across all competitions.
City manager Pep Guardiola, who has been searching for
solutions to his team’s second-half lapses, saw his side complete the job
before halftime. Semenyo opened the scoring after Sander Berge inadvertently
deflected a Matheus Nunes cross into his path for his fifth goal since joining
from Bournemouth. The Ghanaian then assisted O’Reilly, who calmly chipped over
Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno in a lightning counter-attack. Haaland capped the
first-half flourish with a strike from outside the box, his first non-penalty
Premier League goal since December 20.
City had come off a dramatic late comeback against
Liverpool on Sunday, winning 2-1 at Anfield, their first league victory there
in front of a crowd since 2003. Guardiola’s January signings, including Semenyo
and Marc Guehi, have added both attacking firepower and defensive solidity to
reinvigorate City’s title bid.
The win leaves Arsenal’s lead at the top reduced to
three points, after dropping from a nine-point advantage over the past four
days. The Gunners could extend it to six points when they visit in-form
Brentford on Thursday.
Haaland was substituted in the second half for Omar
Marmoush, allowing Guardiola to manage his star striker’s workload. While City
again showed signs of a second-half dip in intensity, their commanding
first-half performance ensured Fulham never mounted a serious comeback.
The result keeps Manchester City firmly in the title
race, signaling that Guardiola’s side is ready to challenge Arsenal for their
first league crown in 22 years.
