Former Flying Eagles midfielder Daniel Daga has been
acquitted of all allegations of rape and sexual misconduct after a Norwegian
appeal court overturned his earlier conviction.
Daga was initially found guilty by a lower three-judge
tribunal, where a two-to-one majority verdict sentenced him to six months in
prison.
However, following an appeal, a higher court panel
comprising seven judges unanimously overturned the ruling, clearing the
Nigerian footballer of all charges.
Reacting to the judgment, a close associate of Daga
described the verdict as a victory for justice.
"This is a highly welcome development," the
associate said.
"The initial trial involved a three-judge panel,
where two judges found him guilty and sentenced him to six months'
imprisonment.
"We immediately appealed the decision, presented
our case, and the court approved the appeal request. The hearing was held on
June 25 and 26, and the appeal was entirely successful. The seven-member panel
unanimously found him not guilty."
The associate added that the ruling completely clears
Daga of all allegations and allows him to move forward with his football
career.
According to the source, Norwegian club Molde FK has
already contacted the midfielder and asked him to rejoin the team immediately
following his acquittal.
