The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), in partnership with
the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), has implemented a new Taxpayer Identification
(Tax ID) system for all taxable persons in Nigeria.
The development was announced on Monday, May 18, in a
notice shared via the agency’s X handle.
According to the NRS, the initiative is supported by
Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which
requires every taxable person to obtain a Tax ID.
The agency said the system is intended to strengthen
tax administration, improve transparency, and streamline service delivery
across federal and sub-national tax authorities.
The NRS noted that the Tax ID will function as a
single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interactions with
tax authorities at both levels of government. It is also designed to
consolidate taxpayer records, remove duplication, and improve the management of
tax-related information.
The revenue service added that the Tax ID will
simplify compliance processes, including registration, tax filing, and payment.
It said the system will also enhance accountability in tax collection by
improving visibility and tracking of taxpayer information, reducing leakages.
Finally, the NRS stated that the framework will
harmonise taxpayer information across all tiers of government.
