Phil Foden has reportedly reached an agreement in
principle to sign a new four-year contract with Manchester City, a move that
would keep him at the club until 2030, with an option for an additional year.
The England international, who is entering the final
year of his current deal, is expected to reaffirm his long-term commitment to
his boyhood club, where he has risen through the academy ranks since making his
senior debut at just 17 in 2017.
Since breaking into the first team, Foden has enjoyed
remarkable success, winning six Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions
League, two FA Cups, and five Carabao Cups.
This season, the 25-year-old midfielder has recorded
10 goals and five assists in 46 appearances across all competitions. However,
his recent performances have not matched the heights of his outstanding 2023/24
campaign, when he claimed both the Premier League Player of the Season and the
PFA Players’ Player of the Year awards.
Over the past two seasons, Foden’s goal contributions
have declined, and he has struggled to maintain a consistent place in the
starting lineup under manager Pep Guardiola. His last goal for City came in
December.
On the international stage, England head coach Thomas
Tuchel has expressed concerns about Foden’s impact, particularly following a
disappointing showing during the most recent international break. Despite
impressing in training, Tuchel noted that the midfielder has found it difficult
to translate that form into match performances.
With the FIFA World Cup approaching, Foden’s place in
the England squad could depend on whether he can rediscover his best form in
the coming months.
