Governor Caleb Mutfwang has assured residents of
Plateau State that the government is intensifying efforts to secure farming
communities following renewed attacks in parts of the state.
The governor gave the assurance on Tuesday during a
visit to the affected Nding community alongside the Minister of Humanitarian
Affairs and Poverty Reduction, other government officials, and security chiefs.
Addressing grieving residents, Mutfwang urged farmers
not to abandon their farmlands despite the recent violence, stressing that the
government was putting measures in place to guarantee safety during the farming
season.
According to him, authorities are working tirelessly
to restore peace and ensure that communities can return to normal life without
fear.
“We are doing everything possible to ensure peace
returns to our communities. I want to assure our farmers to prepare for the
farming season because the government is making plans to ensure that all our
people are protected,” the governor stated.
Mutfwang also sympathized with families who lost loved
ones during the attacks and vowed that those responsible for the violence would
face justice.
“Plateau will not go down because of the activities of
evil men. Those behind these attacks will be brought to book,” he added.
Chairman of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Stephen
Pwajok, expressed concern over what he described as insufficient security
presence in several communities across the area.
Pwajok alleged that an abandoned school in the
locality had become a hideout for criminal groups due to the lack of security
personnel.
“For years, this school has remained closed, and
unfortunately it is now serving as a camp for bandits. The absence of security
personnel in this area has worsened the situation,” he said.
The council chairman further disclosed that seven
persons were killed in another community within Barkin Ladi, warning that
repeated attacks on farming communities were threatening livelihoods and food
production in the area.
Despite the challenges, he commended the Plateau State
Police Command for the rapid deployment of mobile police officers to the
affected community after the latest attack.
Residents of the Nding community have continued to
demand a permanent security presence and stronger government action to end the
recurring violence in Barkin Ladi and other parts of Plateau State.
