Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has stepped down from his position, announcing his resignation in a letter dated April 22 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to the letter, Adelabu stated that his resignation will officially take effect on April 30. He explained that the decision was necessary to allow him focus on his ambition to contest the governorship election in Oyo State.

He referenced provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2026, which restrict political office holders from remaining in office while pursuing elective positions, as part of the reason for his decision to resign.

Adelabu expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve in the cabinet, noting that his appointment allowed him contribute to reforms in the power sector, which he described as one of Nigeria’s most critical areas.

The former minister also appreciated the confidence reposed in him during his tenure and reaffirmed his commitment to public service.

His resignation comes in line with a prior directive from President Tinubu requiring political appointees intending to run for elective office in 2027 to step down by March 31. The directive applies to ministers, special advisers, senior aides, and heads of government agencies who plan to participate in party primaries or elections.
