The much-anticipated political rally organized by The
NEW Associates, initially slated for Saturday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has
been postponed to April 26, 2025, following heightened political sensitivities
and logistical concerns.
George Turnah, convener of the rally and leader of the
Bayelsa State chapter of The NEW Associates, made the announcement during a
press briefing on Friday in Yenagoa.
The rally, widely seen by political observers as a
pro-Wike mobilization, was expected to draw significant attention amid mounting
political rivalry in the state.
Turnah explained that the decision to shift the rally
was taken after consultations with respected leaders across the Ijaw nation and
due to coinciding events planned by rival political interest groups.
“Several pro-Diri and pro-Tambuwal groups have
announced solidarity rallies for the same date and location we had initially
planned for our inauguration,” Turnah said.
“As a peaceful and people-driven organization, we have
decided to shift our event to allow these groups space to express themselves
and to avoid any undue tension.”
He urged supporters to remain steadfast and continue
mobilizing toward a successful and peaceful rally on the new date.
The postponement comes just days after the Bayelsa
State High Court sitting in Yenagoa issued a restraining order barring
associates of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),
from holding a mega rally in the state.
Observers believe the delay may help de-escalate
rising political tensions, at least temporarily, ahead of what promises to be a
heated build-up to future electoral contests in Bayelsa.
