The Police
Service Commission (PSC) has deployed a high-powered monitoring team to Osun
State to oversee the conduct of police personnel ahead of Saturday’s
governorship election.
The
commission said the deployment is aimed at safeguarding the credibility of the
August 15, 2026 election and ensuring that officers assigned to the exercise
strictly comply with established rules and regulations governing election
duties.
In a
statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the PSC Head of Protocol and Public
Relations, Torty Kalu, the commission said its delegation would monitor police
conduct before, during and after the election.
The team
is being led by retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, a
member of the PSC board and Chairman of its Standing Committee on Police
Matters.
According
to the commission, the monitoring team will ensure that police personnel
maintain the highest standards of discipline, professionalism and impartiality
throughout the electoral process.
“The
Commission is committed to deepening public confidence in the electoral process
by guaranteeing that Police conduct remains impartial, rule-based, and civil at
all times,” the PSC said.
The
commission urged all police officers deployed for the election to remain
apolitical, act professionally and protect the rights of citizens to cast their
ballots freely and peacefully.
It also
warned that any officer found compromising the credibility or integrity of the
election would face appropriate sanctions.
“The PSC
reassures Nigerians that it will not hesitate to sanction any officer found
compromising the credibility of the election,” the commission stated.
The
deployment comes ahead of what is expected to be a closely contested
governorship election, with incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke seeking a second
term against several challengers, including the All Progressives Congress (APC)
candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
The
election campaign has been marked by heightened political tensions and
allegations of violence and intimidation, prompting increased security
preparations across the state.
More than
25,000 security personnel are expected to be deployed for the election, while
the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has maintained that
preparations for the August 15 poll are on course.
