On November 27, 2025, Bello El-Rufai, a member of the House of Representatives, raised concerns over the sentencing of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment, compared with a 20-year sentence given to a Boko Haram terrorist, Hussaini Ismaila (aka Mai Tangaran).

Ismaila, a leader of ISWAP, pleaded guilty to four counts of terrorism and was sentenced by a Federal High Court in Abuja on November 18, 2025. Kanu, tried for terrorism offences, was convicted two days later on November 20 and received a life sentence.

El-Rufai questioned the discrepancy in sentencing, stating it creates the perception that “justice is served differently”, which could impact national security and public trust in the judicial system.
