After two months of emotional testimony and legal arguments, hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is set to learn his fate on Friday in a New York federal court.

In July, jurors acquitted the 55-year-old of the most serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, sparing him a possible life sentence. However, he was convicted on two counts related to prostitution, each carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years.

Prosecution vs. Defense

Prosecutors have urged Judge Arun Subramanian to impose at least 11 years, describing Combs as “unrepentant” and a continuing threat. Defense lawyers, by contrast, have asked for 14 months — effectively time served, given that Combs has already spent over a year in a Brooklyn detention center.

Ahead of sentencing, Judge Subramanian is reviewing victim impact statements, letters of support, and a personal plea from Combs himself. In his letter, the artist apologized for his past violence, admitted he was “scared to death” of being away from his family, and vowed never to reoffend.

Testimony from Victims

Among the most powerful statements came from Casandra Ventura, the 39-year-old singer known as Cassie and Combs’s former girlfriend. Ventura testified for several days while heavily pregnant, recounting more than a decade of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.

She told the court she and another woman were coerced into so-called “freak-offs” — sexual marathons with hired men that Combs directed and sometimes filmed.

“The entire courtroom watched actual footage of Combs kicking and beating me as I tried to run away from a freak off in 2016,” Ventura wrote in her victim statement. “I still have nightmares and flashbacks on a regular, everyday basis.”

Ventura said she has left the New York area with her family out of fear of retribution if Combs is released.

Legacy in Tatters

The defense did not deny Combs’s history of violence or his sexual encounters, but argued that the activity was consensual and did not meet the threshold for the more serious charges.

Still, Combs’s legal team maintains that his legacy is already “shattered” and that he has been “humbled and broken to [his] core” by the ordeal.

Possible Political Lifeline

Regardless of the sentence, speculation persists over a possible presidential pardon. People close to Combs have reportedly reached out to the White House seeking clemency. Former President Donald Trump, who once socialized in the same circles as Combs, has remained noncommittal, particularly given Combs’s criticism of Trump in recent years.
