The Senate has confirmed the appointments of Aminu
Yusuf as Chairman and Joseph Haruna Kigbu and Tonga Betara Bularafa as
Commissioners of the National Identity and National Population Commission.
The confirmation followed the presentation and
consideration of the report by the Senate Committee on National Identity and
National Population during plenary on Tuesday.
Presenting the report, Chairman of the Committee,
Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central), said the nominees were thoroughly
screened on October 14, 2025.
“The nominees appeared before the committee for
screening on Tuesday, the 14th of October, 2025,” Umeh said.
“The committee did not receive any criminal complaints against any of the
nominees. They are prepared for the job for which they have been nominated.”
Umeh noted that the committee requested and reviewed
relevant documents, including curriculum vitae, code of conduct clearance
certificates, police reports, and DSS clearances before the screening.
He added that each nominee presented their vision,
qualifications, and experience, which demonstrated their competence and
readiness to serve.
The senator representing Anambra North, Tony Nwoye,
seconded the motion for the consideration of the committee’s report.
Subsequently, the Senate resolved into the Committee of the Whole, after which Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the confirmation to a voice vote. The nominations were unanimously approved by lawmakers.
