The Supreme Court has nullified the Ibadan convention
organised by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu
Turaki, SAN, which was held in Ibadan, Oyo State in November 2025.
In a split decision of three justices to two, the apex
court ruled against the faction, condemning what it described as clear
disobedience of subsisting court orders.
Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Stephen Adah
faulted the Turaki-led group for proceeding with the convention despite a court
directive that halted preparations until all interested candidates were given
the opportunity to purchase nomination forms and participate in the process.
The court stressed that the Ibadan convention went
ahead in defiance of judicial orders, describing the action as “condemnable”
and unacceptable in a constitutional democracy.
The case stemmed from an appeal challenging a Court of
Appeal decision which had affirmed that former Jigawa State Governor Sule
Lamido was unlawfully excluded from the PDP chairmanship race.
The five-member panel expressed strong displeasure
over the faction’s conduct, stating that disregard for court directives
undermines the rule of law and the integrity of the judicial system.
The convention, held on November 15 and 16, 2025, had
produced a factional leadership under Tanimu Turaki, SAN, a development now
rendered void by the Supreme Court ruling.
