President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Minister
of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to immediately relocate to Kebbi State
following the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in the state.
The directive, issued on Thursday, mandates
Matawalle—who previously served as governor of Zamfara State—to remain in Kebbi
and coordinate ongoing security operations aimed at rescuing the abducted
students.
Gunmen had stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive
Secondary School in Maga, headquarters of Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area,
around 4 a.m. on Monday, abducting 24 students.
Matawalle, who is expected to arrive in Birnin-Kebbi
on Friday, is widely regarded as having significant experience in dealing with
banditry and mass abductions during his tenure as Zamfara governor from 2019 to
2023. One of the most notable incidents during his administration was the
abduction of 279 schoolgirls in Jangebe on February 26, 2021, all of whom were
released on March 2, 2021.
President Tinubu has also postponed his planned trips
to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, as he continues to receive
updates on the Kebbi schoolgirls’ abduction as well as the attack on
worshippers at a Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.
