President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday received a
comprehensive security briefing from the Chief of Army Staff (COAS),
Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on the current situation in Nigeria’s
North-East region.
The meeting, held at the Presidential Villa,
marked the first official engagement between the President and the newly
appointed army chief since his decoration.
Shaibu told State House correspondents after the
meeting that he had recently toured the North-East theatre of operations for an
on-the-spot assessment of ongoing counterterrorism efforts.
“I just came to brief him on the outcome of my visit
to the northeast region and look at other security situations across the
country, which is satisfactory within the period,” the army chief said.
When asked what Nigerians should expect following his
field visit, Shaibu assured the public of “improved security across the
country.”
Shaibu is one of the newly appointed service chiefs
under President Tinubu’s administration, alongside General Olufemi Oluyede
(Chief of Defence Staff), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas (Chief of Naval Staff),
and Air Marshal Kelvin Aneke (Chief of Air Staff).
During their decoration earlier this year, President
Tinubu charged the military leaders to work in unity and with patriotic zeal,
noting that Nigerians are eager to see results, not excuses.
“Of grave concern to our administration is the recent
emergence of new armed groups in the North-Central, North-West, and parts of
the South. We must not allow these new threats to fester,” the President had
said.
