South African pop sensation Tyla has once again claimed the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance, securing the honour with her hit track Push 2 Start and becoming the first artiste to win the category twice.

The 24-year-old star previously took home the award at its debut in 2024 for her global breakout single Water. Her latest victory further cements her growing influence on the international music scene and highlights her status as one of Africa’s most successful young pop exports.

Introduced in 2024, the Best African Music Performance category celebrates recordings that showcase the richness and diversity of African music. The 2025 award was won by Nigerian singer Tems.

Tyla’s continued success has drawn attention to her ability to blend amapiano, pop and R&B into a sound that connects strongly with audiences worldwide.

Push 2 Start, taken from her self-titled debut album Tyla released in 2024, gained massive traction through streaming platforms and viral dance trends on social media. The song blends amapiano rhythms with pop melodies while exploring themes of romance, confidence and self-expression.

This year’s category was fiercely contested, featuring a line-up dominated by some of Africa’s biggest names. Nigerian stars Davido, Burna Boy and Ayra Starr were among the nominees.

Other contenders included Burna Boy (Love), Davido featuring Omah Lay (With You), Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid (Gimme Dat), and Eddy Kenzo alongside Mehran Matin (Hope & Love).

Beyond the Grammy win, Tyla’s rise reflects a rapid and impressive career journey. Since emerging from Johannesburg and signing an international record deal in 2021, she has reached major milestones, including a top-25 debut on the Billboard 200 and worldwide chart success with Water.

The 68th Grammy Awards also marked a significant moment for African music as a whole, with Nigerian music legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti receiving a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award, further underscoring Africa’s growing cultural impact on the global stage.
