At least 13 people have been confirmed dead
after an underground mining site collapsed in Zamfara State on Thursday,
leaving several others still trapped beneath the rubble.
Local sources told Channels Television that the
victims were artisanal miners working inside the pit when the collapse
occurred. Rescue operations are ongoing, with fears that the death toll may
rise.
The Executive Secretary of the Zamfara State Solid
Minerals Development Agency, Nasiru Bamanga, confirmed the incident
but said he was still awaiting a full report.
“I heard about the incident, and I’m yet to get full
details. I will be going there later today and, Insha Allah, I will give you
full information when I return,” Bamanga said.
The collapse highlights the growing dangers associated
with illegal and artisanal mining in northern Nigeria, where poor safety
standards and unstable tunnels often put workers’ lives at risk.
Authorities are expected to provide an update once
more details emerge.
