The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially opened its national secretariat in Wuse 2, Abuja, as part of its preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The inauguration, held on Monday, was led by former Senate President and ADC National Chairman, David Mark. He was joined by prominent political figures including former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola and former Kaduna State governor Nasir el-Rufai.

Other dignitaries in attendance were former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, and Senator Dino Melaye.

Mark Calls for Focus Ahead of 2027

In his remarks, Mark urged party members to intensify efforts toward the 2027 elections, reiterating that the ADC—now adopted as the platform for the opposition coalition—is committed to rescuing and rebuilding the country.

The coalition had formally adopted the ADC as its political vehicle on July 2, 2025, positioning it as the unified front to challenge the ruling party in the upcoming general elections.

“This coalition of national political opposition groups goes beyond gaining political power. It is a concerted effort to rebuild the crumbling pillars of Nigeria’s democracy.
The mission is clear: Rescue Nigeria. Rebuild Nigeria. Return power to the people,” Mark said.

Accusations Against the APC-Led Government

Mark accused the Federal Government, led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), of hijacking democratic institutions and pushing the nation toward what he described as a “total civilian dictatorship.” He said the administration had spent the last two years “consumed with politicking” rather than governance.

He further alleged that the ruling party was destabilising and infiltrating opposition parties to pave the way for total state capture ahead of 2027.

“This coalition is to prevent our country’s descent into a one-party state,” he added.

Broad Coalition Membership

The opposition movement includes notable political heavyweights such as:

  • Atiku Abubakar, 2023 PDP presidential candidate
  • Peter Obi, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate
  • Senator Dino Melaye
  • Solomon Dalong, former Minister of Youth
  • Dele Momodu
  • Senator Gabriel Suswam
  • Senator Ireti Kingibe
  • Emeka Ihedioha, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives
  • Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (rtd.), former Chief of Air Staff

In July, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu formally handed over leadership and presented membership cards to David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola, who now serve as interim national chairman and national secretary, respectively.
