The Gombe State Police Command has arrested a
35-year-old man, Musa Adamu, for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend with a
hammer, attempting to strangle her, and robbing her of N100,000 after she
reportedly refused to give him money.
The arrest was confirmed by the Police Public
Relations Officer of the command, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, in a statement issued
on Wednesday.
According to the police, the incident occurred in the
early hours of June 9 at Riyal Quarters in Gombe, where the suspect allegedly
gained access to the victim’s residence by scaling the perimeter fence and
forcefully entering her room.
Police said the victim, whose identity was withheld,
reported the matter to the Pantami Divisional Police Headquarters at about 8:00
a.m. on the same day.
Investigators alleged that Musa Adamu attacked the
woman with an iron hammer and attempted to strangle her using a USB cable
before making away with N100,000 belonging to her.
The victim reportedly raised an alarm during the
attack, prompting the suspect to flee the scene. She sustained serious injuries
and was later rushed to a hospital, where she received treatment before being
discharged.
Following the report, police officers visited the
scene and immediately launched an investigation. The suspect was subsequently
tracked down and arrested at about 9:45 a.m. the same day.
Items recovered from the suspect included an iron
hammer suspected to have blood stains and a USB cable allegedly used during the
attack.
Preliminary findings by the police revealed that the
suspect had earlier requested financial assistance from the victim, who is a
businesswoman. However, she reportedly declined the request, a development
investigators believe may have contributed to the incident.
The suspect remains in police custody while
investigations continue. Authorities said he will be charged to court upon the
conclusion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police in Gombe State, Umar Ahmed
Chuso, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and
urged residents to promptly report suspicious activities and criminal behavior
to security agencies.
Police authorities said further updates will be
provided as investigations progress.
