Nigeria has stepped up its campaign to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, as a high-powered delegation led by National Sports Commission Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, arrived in London for the decisive round of presentations.

If successful, this would mark the first time the Games are staged in Africa, with Abuja proposed as the host city.

Last month, Mallam Shehu Dikko delivered Nigeria’s initial pitch, setting the foundation for this week’s critical engagements with the Commonwealth Games Federation. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has since reaffirmed the Federal Government’s full support, pledging that Nigeria is ready to deliver a world-class sporting event.

Just last week, the Commonwealth Games Bid Evaluation Team visited Nigeria, where they were received by Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President. The visit further highlighted the administration’s commitment to securing the Games.

Nigeria’s delegation to London also includes:

  • Hon. Sunday Dare, Special Assistant on Public Communication and Presidential Spokesperson
  • Mallam Mainasara Ilo, Bid Coordinator
  • Engr. Habu Gumel, President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee
  • Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Arts and Culture
  • Mary Onyali, 5-time Olympian and 2-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist
  • Eniola Bolaji, current para-badminton world number one

Nigeria’s bid is anchored on inclusivity, legacy, and development, with a promise to host a Games that not only celebrates the Commonwealth spirit but also creates lasting opportunities for sports, culture, and youth empowerment across Africa.
