The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced a notable improvement in electricity generation following the successful repair of the vandalised Lagos–Escravos gas supply infrastructure.

In a statement, NISO disclosed that the restoration work was carried out by the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), leading to increased gas supply to several key thermal power plants across the country.

The update comes amid recent complaints of poor electricity supply in different parts of Nigeria.

According to NISO, the development marks a positive step toward stabilising power generation and improving the reliability of the national electricity grid.

“Gradual power offtake is currently being implemented by the affected power plants to ensure a smooth recovery process and maintain stability within both the gas supply network and the national grid,” the operator said.

It explained that the phased approach is designed to prevent system strain while ensuring a steady and reliable electricity supply for industries, businesses, and households.

NISO further stated that additional thermal power plants remain available and on standby, pending confirmation of gas supply from their respective suppliers.

“These plants will be integrated into the national grid to further boost generation capacity and reduce the risk of outages,” the statement added.

The operator said it continues to collaborate closely with key stakeholders, including power generation companies, gas suppliers, and regulatory agencies, to monitor developments and address operational challenges in real time.

Reaffirming its commitment to a stable and resilient power system, NISO noted that sustained improvements in electricity supply are critical to Nigeria’s socio-economic growth.

The agency also urged electricity consumers to continue practising energy conservation as efforts to fully stabilise power supply progress.
