?Starlink, the satellite internet service owned by Elon Musk's SpaceX, has announced a significant increase in its subscription prices for Nigerian customers. Effective January 27, 2025, the monthly fee for the standard residential plan will rise from ?38,000 to ?75,000, marking a 97% increase. Additionally, the cost of the Starlink hardware kit has been adjusted from ?440,000 to ?590,000.

In a message to its subscribers, Starlink attributed the price hike to "excessive inflation," stating that the adjustment is necessary to maintain operations and continue delivering reliable service in Nigeria.

This development follows a previous attempt by Starlink to increase its prices in October 2024, which was suspended due to regulatory challenges. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had earlier stated that Starlink did not receive approval for the initial price increment, citing contraventions of Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.

Despite the regulatory hurdles, Starlink has proceeded with the new pricing structure, which also includes increased rates for its roaming services: ?167,000 for regional roaming and ?717,000 for global roaming.

The price adjustments have sparked mixed reactions among Nigerian users. Some industry stakeholders argue that, despite the increase, Starlink's offerings remain competitive due to their unlimited data, high speeds, and reliability. Others express concerns about affordability and the potential impact on widespread adoption, especially considering the country's economic challenges.

As of the end of 2023, Starlink had become the third-largest Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Nigeria, with 23,897 active subscribers, reflecting a significant growth since its official launch in January 2023.

The NCC has yet to confirm whether it has approved the latest price adjustments. The situation underscores the ongoing tension between service providers seeking to adjust prices in response to economic conditions and regulatory bodies aiming to protect consumer interests.
