The Edo State Government has
commenced the disbursement of ?4.6 billion in pension and entitlement
payments to staff and retirees of state-owned colleges who were disengaged
under the previous administration.
According to a statement
issued by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the
move reflects the governor’s commitment to fairness, justice, and the
welfare of workers affected by past controversial disengagements.
The fund will cover 682
pensioners from the College of Education, Ekiadolor, and 32 pensioners from the
College of Education, Igueben. The payout is structured into four tranches,
with each tranche amounting to ?1.16 billion. The first tranche has already
been disbursed in line with the provisions of the Pension Act.
To further demonstrate
commitment to restoring dignity to disengaged workers, Governor Okpebholo also
approved the immediate release of ?292 million as the second tranche of
entitlements to staff of the Colleges of Agriculture in Iguoriakhi and
Agenebode. Payments are expected to be effected on or before Wednesday.
With this intervention, the
state government has so far released ?1.4 billion to four colleges of
education, providing relief to hundreds of families. The government
described the initiative as part of its ongoing reforms to reposition the
education sector while ensuring that those unfairly affected in the past are
not left behind.
“The Edo State Government
reassures all stakeholders, especially retirees and disengaged staff of
state-owned institutions, that this process will continue until every
legitimate entitlement is fully settled,” the statement added.
